*The word “Satire” comes from “Satyr”. Pan was a Satyr, half man half goat. He played the Pan Pipes and whistled a be-witching tune that aroused the ladies. The word “Cynic” comes from “Kynikos” meaning “like the dogs”. It is a philosophical term signifying a person who is suspicious of everyone. Diogenes’ father was a famous politician but he slept in a large clay pot surrounded by dogs. When people gave him money because they conceived of him as a homeless beggar he shat on it in front of them. He might also be the origin of the middle finger which is a reference to Zeus. He was a contemporary of Pythagoras, Plato, Socrates, & Aristotle.
